I diodi Zener sono progettati per il funzionamento in modalità breakdown inversa e sono caratterizzati in base al loro comportamento quando vengono utilizzati in questo modo. Utili come riferimento di tensione o per limitare la tensione, sono anche in grado di funzionare come "valvola" unidirezionale per il flusso di corrente come i diodi raddrizzatori, anche se il loro comportamento in questa modalità è in genere meno ideale di quello dei dispositivi costruiti appositamente. I prodotti di questa famiglia implementano esattamente un'istanza di questa funzione per ogni contenitore di dispositivo.
