I dispositivi di soppressione di tensioni transitorie (TVS) basati su tiristore sono dispositivi di protezione da sovratensione che, in condizioni operative normali, assomigliano a un circuito aperto. Quando viene loro applicata una tensione superiore a un valore specifico chiamato tensione di breakover, entrano in uno stato conduttivo simile a un cortocircuito.Questo stato persiste fino a quando il flusso di corrente che attraversa il dispositivo non viene ridotto al di sotto di un valore minimo chiamato "corrente di tenuta" da una influenza esterna all'interno del circuito.
