I prodotti della famiglia di riferimento di tensione sono utilizzati per ricavare un potenziale elettrico con un valore stabile e ben definito da una fonte più incerta, da usare come standard di confronto in applicazioni di misurazione, controllo e simili. Anche se il loro comportamento funzionale può essere simile a quello dei regolatori di tensione lineare utilizzati per la regolazione dell'energia all'ingrosso, i dispositivi di riferimento della tensione non sono adattati per l'uso in quanto tali. Le loro prestazioni come standard di confronto hanno una relazione generalmente inversa con l'aumentare della capacità della corrente di uscita o di quella effettiva assorbita da un carico.
