DAC-Slide3

DC Performance requirements are also dictated by the type of application, whether it is open loop, closed loop, or “set and forget". With a closed loop system, the DAC sets an analog voltage and the system performs a task such as turning a motor or opening a valve. Then an analog-to-digital converter, also known as an ADC, measures the system performance and uses an algorithm to correct for any imperfections. The DAC in a closed loop system can get away with poor integral nonlinearity, or INL, but must have good differential nonlinearity, or DNL. An open loop must have both good INL and good DNL because it has no feedback path or ADC. The DAC must be very accurate with its level setting on its own. A third type of system, the “set and forget”, is kind of a mix between closed loop and open loop and must have stability over time and temperature.
