These graphs show efficiency data for the MAX17501B operating in PFM mode and the MAX17501F operating in PWM mode. The output voltage of these parts is 5 V. Note that peak efficiencies of over 90% are achieved. At light loads, PWM mode results in a significant efficiency drop below around 100 mA, while in contrast, PFM mode maintains a gentle slope. If light load efficiency is critical to an application, PFM mode should be chosen.
