Ein Sicherung ist ein Gerät, das den Stromfluss stoppen soll, wenn ein bestimmter Grenzwert überschritten wird (Überstromschutz). Die Komponenten funktionieren, indem sie eine Unterbrechung in einem Material erzeugen, das sich zwischen zwei Endanschlüssen befindet. Das Material schmilzt infolge eines Temperaturanstiegs, der durch Änderungen des Stromflusses durch das Gerät hindurch verursacht wird (d. h., die Sicherung „brennt durch“). Aus der Dauer bis zum Durchbrennen der Sicherungen leitet sich ihre Einteilung in „flinke“ oder „träge“ Ausführungen ab.
